WHAT IS MENTAL WELLNESS?

  • Mental health issues are on the rise globally. Factors such as stress, societal pressures, economic instability, and traumatic events can contribute to mental health challenges. The COVID-19 pandemic, for example, has exacerbated mental health concerns for many individuals.
  • Mental wellness refers to a state of well-being in which an individual realizes their own abilities, can cope with the normal stresses of life, work productively, and contribute to their community. It encompasses emotional, psychological, and social well-being and involves maintaining a balance in various aspects of life, such as: Emotional,  Psychological,  Social,  Physical, Spiritual Well-being.
  • Mental wellness is not just the absence of mental illness but rather a positive state of mental health. Strategies for promoting mental wellness include seeking support from mental health professionals, practicing self-care, maintaining a healthy lifestyle, seeking social support, and developing coping skills to deal with life’s challenges. Ultimately, mental wellness is about striving for a fulfilling and balanced life that supports psychological and emotional health. Strategies for promoting mental wellness include seeking support from mental health professionals, practicing self-care, maintaining a healthy lifestyle, seeking social support, and developing coping skills to deal with life’s challenges. • Mental wellness is more than a pop psychology term, it is a part of the future of medicine, which is moving daily toward a concept of holistic treatment.

Counseling/ Psychotherapies

Individual therapy and group therapy are two common forms of psychotherapy, and they differ in several ways, including the format, goals, benefits, and considerations for their use. Here are some key differences between the two:

  • Individual Therapy:

  1.  A person works one-on-one with a therapist or counselor. The focus is entirely on the individual, and the therapy sessions are private and confidential.
  2. It is tailored to the specific needs and goals of the individual client. It allows for a deep exploration of personal issues, emotions, and experiences. The therapist can provide individualized attention and focus on the client’s unique concerns.
  3. Provides a highly personalized and individualized approach to treatment.
  4. Offers a safe and private space for discussing sensitive or personal issues.
  5. Ideal for individuals who have highly personal or sensitive issues to address.
  6. Suited for those who prefer one-on-one interactions or have difficulty opening up in a group setting.
  7. Appropriate for people with specific or unique treatment needs.
  8. Allows for in-depth exploration of personal history and emotions.
  9. Therapists in individual sessions can employ a wide range of therapeutic techniques tailored to the client’s needs, including cognitive-behavioral therapy, psychoanalysis, REBT,and more.

Group Therapy:

  1. Group therapy involves a small group of individuals (typically 6 to 15) who meet together with one or more therapists or facilitators. The sessions are conducted in a group setting, and participants interact with each other during the session.
  2. Group therapy focuses on the shared experiences and concerns of the group members. The goals often include providing a supportive environment for individuals to explore and discuss their issues, learn from others, and develop interpersonal skills.
  3. Offers a sense of community and belonging as participants realize they are not alone in their struggles.
  4. Provides opportunities for social interaction and peer support.
  5. Can be more cost-effective than individual therapy.
  6. Beneficial for individuals who can benefit from peer support and sharing experiences with others.
  7. Effective for certain types of issues, such as addiction, social anxiety, and interpersonal difficulties.
  8. May not be suitable for individuals who are uncomfortable sharing in a group or have very individualized concerns.
  9. Group therapy often incorporates techniques such as group discussion, role-playing, and peer feedback to facilitate interaction and support within the group.

Ultimately, the choice between individual therapy and group therapy depends on the individual’s specific needs, preferences, and the nature of the issues they are facing. Some individuals may benefit from a combination of both types of therapy at different points in their treatment journey. It’s important to consult with a mental health professional to determine the most appropriate form of therapy for a particular situation
